I have seen the 80's Astro Boy English series (and own the full 51 episodes on DVD), the 2003 US series (which is still a little too different for me compared to the 80's series) and also recently seen the 2009 movie (which is quite well done with nods to previous incarnations). My 3 year old daughter has become a huge fan and Astro Boy is almost constantly playing on the TV when she is watching it! I would love to see more of the early live action series. It looks pretty cool. Pity they couldn't go and do a live action movie!

Great article. The argument for open-source software over proprietary closed software is well made. I too think that the open source options will last as long as the hyped conventions, if not longer. I had been thinking about opening a twitter account but the nick I wanted was not available. Shortly after reading this post, I opened up a identi.ca account. Thanks for helping me make my decision.

It would be great if you could dedicate an paragraph to jaiku as it is open source now but owned by google.

UPDATE:

Apple responded saying I'd contacted their store sales support team and that they had no training on Mobile Me. It looks like there's no other method of contacting Apple just yet. I'll wait for the refund to come through and then write to them again explaining my dismay!

I got a skypephone couple of weeks ago, the most annoying thing about it is that it won't send email in background and I have to go through Planet 3 to mail which is inconvenient to say the least. 3 Store couldn't sort it even with their own tech people talking the guy through it over the phone... just shrugged shoulders and "..looks like you'll have to mail that way then".. hmmm.. poor!

Oh, one last thing. Yesterday I loaded the (crappy) MSN Messenger application and logged on. I then quit it. Later, my phone decided to automatically launch Messenger again at some arbitrary point, without my instruction. I simply picked up my phone and there I was, logged in to Messenger. I shook my head at it and quit the application again. Around an hour later there it was again, logged in to Messenger! I took my password details out of the client and it seems to have stopped...

As an update, I am having a large number of problems with the phone.

At some point I began experiencing issues receiving duplicate SMSs. I'd be sent an SMS and then receive it two or three or more times before it would finally stop arriving. I complained to Three who put the blame back on the sending network however, I disputed this as the SMSs all had the same timestamp and so they were definitely copies of the same, single message. I told Three that it must be their network not acknowledging receipt of the SMS. As it turns out it was the handset. At around 450 messages full, it will, for some reason, stop acknowledging message receipt and you will start receiving dupes. I found that clearing out my SMS box did the trick to work around the issue, so every 400 messages or so I have to clear my inbox of messages. This is really, really annoying.

Another issue that has come about is that the phone will freeze up temporarily when it's doing network activity like receiving an SMS. If you receive three SMSs in a row the phone will freeze for around 10 seconds! Each SMS that starts coming through means that the menus are completely non-responsive making it impossible to navigate the phone.

Yet another issue is that when I'm on a phone call and an SMS or something comes through, the phone will beep in my ear but it will cut out the caller speaking just enough that I could not understand what the caller said and have to ask them to repeat. The same happens when the phone sets off the alarm during a call.

If you set up a contact and then later you add a second number for that person, there is no way to specify a primary number. My friend recently got a second number temporarily but held on to both, so I decided to keep both of his numbers on hand for a while. Because this second number I added was a new entry to his existing profile, it was second in the list of numbers. The phone doesn't care about this and when you bring up that person to call them it will always default to the first number. There's no way to change the order or the priority.

The phone is starting to turn itself off periodically. It has been knocked around a bit and I think this may be the cause of the powering off problem, but not the software issues!

The screen is too dimly lit to be seen properly in sunlight, so I'm constantly having difficulty seeing what I'm doing.

When trying to unlock the phone, it will periodically go spastic. The sequence is to press 'Unlock *', and when you pull it out of your pocket and press Unlock it will pop up "Now Press *". So you press * and nothing happens other than the "Now Press *" message repeatedly coming up. You keep whacking Unlock *, Unlock *, Unlock * in the hopes that it will unlock but it just won't. Sometimes I can get it to unlock by pressing the Skype button, then Unlock * (which I do because to me pressing the Skype button and then trying the unlock sequence it is kind of like breaking the keypress loop as above.) Also, sometimes just leaving it for a bit and then trying again helps.

When receiving or making calls I have experienced occasional difficulty in hanging up the call, ie. the phone call will end and then the phone apparently freezes and no buttons will press. I think this may have also occurred when trying to make a call, too, and I'd called the wrong person and wanted to hang up fast but couldn't!

When you buy a monthly Internet add-on, the browser sets a cookie when you first use the Internet connection and reminds you to use a top up or you'll be charged £1/Mb. It stores this cookie for 1 day which gives you prompt-free surfing for 24 hours, after which it will prompt you AGAIN and ask you to check if you have an Internet add-on. It's really quite annoying because it happens every SINGLE day. If you buy a monthly add-on it gets frustrating. Why can't they just let me disable "casual browsing" and make sure I always use a monthly, or just automatically top up my monthly for me? Why can't the cookie store a 25-day cookie instead and then start reminding me only towards the end of the browsing??? SO ANNOYING!!

....... So these are my infuriating adventures with the phone and I will be buying an Apple iPhone as soon as the new version gets released.
